INTERVIEWS
with Juicy X and Mystery Woman
@Horror-Realm
--------------------------------------------
First of all, I have to warn you all, that this movie is NOT for everyone. The Benefactress by Guerrilla Metropolitana is a possibly deeply disturbing independent underground arthouse film that contains strong (and real) pornographic as well as snuff film elements.
Guerrilla Metropolitana's Alias derives from his style of filmmaking (Guerrilla) and the short form and slightly adjusted of “Metropolitan Stories” (Metropolitana). To me, Metropolitana has an italian sound to it which may also link to his italian roots.
So lets get down to it. The following review and insights are based off of being able to view the film and by watching interviews with the main actresses Juicy X and Mystery Woman conducted by Travis Bruce of Horror-Realm.
Even though there was a rough script, 95% of the film was improvised on set and the occuring sex scenes are real. People say "The Benefactress" is a love it or hate it film – even though I understand what people mean by that, I personally don't fully agree since I enjoyed the film without calling it my go-to-genre. I enjoy it for being the art that is is. It is highly experimental, very extreme, raw and graphic.
What is the film about though? You get to witness a woman (Juicy X) who physically and sexually abuses another woman (Mystery Woman) in the meanest imaginable ways. She is seemingly in control but you find out fast, that the director himself is dictating everything that happens – and he also actively partakes in the abuse.
The film striked me emotionally as it is a piece of art that isnt easy to watch. It is almost unpleasent at times – but from an art perspective in a positive way. The Benefactress takes you way further than just showing you an independent film – it invites you in to get a feeling of what its like to make such a film. As some documentaries have tried to give the viewer a behind the scenes look, The Benefactress actually achieves just that by being brutally transparent and unfiltered.
You get to see real pornography (not porn!), intense abuse and unfiltered violence. This is not a gore horror film, this is a very explicit arthouse film. This movie plays with your emotions, desires, nerves and believe in humanity.
In her interview, Juicy X makes it clear, that making that film has not always been very easy and that afterwards, it took her some time to understand and comprehend what they had done. She had to go out of her comfort zone and stresses very clearly, that her trust in Guerrilla Metroploitana was a very crucial key element in her decision to consent to making that movie.
Mystery Woman, who plays the victim, on the other hand speaks about how she was mesmerized by the film Dariuss and how her and the director grew to have a very close relationship. She furthermore talks about being his muse and that they learn a lot from each other. Going into making that film, she was ready to do whatever was required of her to fulfill the ideas of Guerrilla Metropolitana to make his art come to live.
Between Dariuss and The Benefactress, he does not plan on making any more movies – it is said that he has created what he wanted and wants to avoid the risk of watering down his art by adding more and more just for the sake of increasing his filmography.
Rating: In that specific subgenre, I rate this movie a solid 8/10.
Special sneak peak: The austrila based horror author Del Gibson will soon (within the next months) be publishing a book about the artistic work of Guerrilla Metropolitana under the name “Searching for the Perfect Butterfly” - so keep an eye out for that as well.
